So now that I am pg and I cant do the litter box anymore what should I do?  DH would rather give the cat away then clean it himself. Any ideas?  I was thinking about one of the self cleaning ones but they cost so much??

    Thanks

You can still change the litter box, you just have to be more careful...get the dust-free kind of litter, wear gloves or wash your hands very well afterwards...just when you are cleaning, especially when emptying it, don't inhale the dust from it.

Well you could look around for a good deal on a self cleaning one.  You could do it yourself and be super careful- wear gloves, a face mask, and wash the hell out of your hands.  Personally, though, if it were me- I would kick DH's butt and make him do it.  Tell him you love the cat and you'll do it but then slather a little guilt on by adding you hope that your baby isnt hurt by it.... worked with mine Happy Wink

Cat faeces can carry a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, an infection that isn't serious for you but can pose a danger to your developing baby.

Some birds and other animals, as well as some raw, cured or undercooked meats, can also carry the parasite. Toxoplasmosis causes most severe damage to the fetus if a woman comes down with it in her first trimester.

Happily, the odds of contracting toxoplasmosis during pregnancy are low, and if you've had it once, you can't catch it again. What's more, it's rare for a woman to be infected for the first time during pregnancy and some experts argue that you're much more likely to catch it from eating raw, undercooked or cured meat than from your cat. Plus, if you live with cats, the likelihood is even higher that you've already contracted the disease and developed an immunity to it. Read our article on toxoplasmosis for more information.

Experts recommend that pregnant women should avoid emptying the cat litter tray. Ideally it should be cleared every day by someone else. If you have to do it yourself, always wear rubber gloves and wash both your hands and the gloves thoroughly afterwards.

Wear gloves when you're gardening and handling soil or sand, too, to cut down the risk of infection from cat and animal faeces. Always wash your hands before preparing or handling food and be very strict about food hygiene.

There is a blood test which can show whether you have had toxoplasmosis. If you are worried, speak to your GP about it.

as part of the regular pregnancy bloodwork I have always gotton a test for immunity to toxoplasmosis or whatever that is called.  Its just a standard test they run.  Call your dr and ask if you have immunity.  If you do there is no reason to worry at all.  If you don't and want to keep your cat wear gloves, wear a dust mask, buy high quality dust free cat litter, and wash very well afterwards.  You can also go get your cat tested to see if they are a carrier or not.  If they aren't and don't go outside or catch mice etc then its not a worry again.
