State attorney general investigates Baby Gender Mentor retailer for consumer fraud

The Illinois state attorney general has opened an investigation into sales of the Baby Gender Mentor prenatal DNA gender test by PregnancyStore.com.
Our office will be trying to gather information about the role of the company in the sale of the product and also whether or not there have been any consumer fraud laws broken.

One Florida couple were told by Acu-Gen to expect a boy, but learned by amniocentesis that their baby is a girl. The father-to-be was upset when the result was explained as a "vanishing twin" -- even though a previous ultrasound had ruled out twins -- and said it was like being told "you had a baby conceived and it died... I thought that that was very distressing for them to present it in that way".

NPR reporter Nell Boyce also reveals that complaints about the test have been filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

I recently took the test and wew were told we were expecting a girl. A recent ultrasound unmistakably told us we are expecting a boy! This test is a fraud!

I also took the Baby Gender Mentor test and was told I'm having a girl. Myultrasound undeniably shows I am carrying a boy. This is my first child and already I have been through an emotional rollercoaster. I am planning on getting my 200% refund, but I really think this company needs to be checked out.

I had an ultrasound done at 19 weeks and was told I was having a girl. I felt like I was having another boy so I took the DNA test. It came back saying I was going to have a baby boy. I had a second ultrasound done and my doctor says it is without a doubt a girl. I called Acu-gene lab and told them the story. They said they double checked and it was a baby boy. Well, I find out in nine days when my doc. does the C-section.

I also took the Gender Mentor test at 7 weeks. Acu-Gen confirmed that I was having a boy. I just had my 20-week sonogram and was told that my sonogram unmistakeably shows that I am having a girl. Acu-Gen claims the presence of Y chromosome could be due to a previous miscarriage but there has not been one in my medical history to our knowledge. I feel that Acu-gen does not present all the facts to the consumer nor do they represent a true accuracy rating for their test. They say claim that to date they have never been incorrect but obviously that is not truthful based on the testimonials I have read on the internet and the fact that a class-action lawsuit is presently being pursued.

My husband and I took this test at 8 weeks gestation. Our blood test results arrived via fedex on a monday morning at 9:21 am-we recieved an email stating we were having a another baby boy at 11:32 am that SAME DAY! How is this possible? Unless the AcuGen lab is located INSIDE a Fed Ex plane....yeah right!

Wow! This story is just like mine. BGM, or rather Acu-Gen told me I was having a girl and then they e-mailed me back and told me my test had changed and now I was having twins, a boy and a girl. I just took the test over today. I am SO sure that after they do my second blood test it will be a twin horror story about how one of them vanished. I've had 3 ultrasounds and they all came back with one baby. Thank goodness a state is willing to step up for the right of it's citizens.

About Me

In 1999, my two sons were 4 and 2 years old, and we were ready to have another baby. I hoped to have a daughter, and I turned to the Internet to search for ways of increasing the odds of conceiving a girl. I discovered the iVillage Gender Determination Board. On the board, I found information about at-home and high-tech sex selection methods, but more importantly, I discovered I wasn't alone. I was one among a legion of mothers who longed desperately for a daughter, keeping it a secret so others wouldn't think, wrongly, that we loved our sons less, and feeling guilty becuse we're not supposed to care if a baby's a boy or a girl, "as long as it's healthy". There were, of course, also mothers hoping just as much to add a son to their all-girl family.

After a lot of research and soul-searching, my husband I decided to try MicroSort. In the fall of 2000, I became pregnant on our first MicroSort attempt, by IUI. At 20 weeks of pregnancy, we discovered we were having twins, a boy and a girl! We were thrilled to have a daughter at last, and a new son to cherish too.

During my journey to conceive a daughter, I was so grateful for the support and information volunteered by others on the boards; mothers who didn't even know me, but were willing to help me, hope for me, and cry along with me, when there was no one I could turn to "in real life". I know that without being able to talk personally with women who had tried MicroSort, I would have never gone through with this daunting, complex procedure; and that we would have never had a daughter as part of our family.

Now that my journey's finished, this Web site is just my way of giving some of that help back, to you.
